Welcome to the world of Japanese folklore with a twist! My latest Amigurumi crochet pattern brings to life the Inugami and Nekogami, two fascinating yokai straight from the mystical streets of Japan.

Who are Inugami and Nekogami

Inugami, literally dog god or dog ghost is a spiritual being often involved in vengeful plots, embodying loyalty and fierceness. They are said to have more or less dog-like features, but often with an anthropomorphic appearance. Also, they are known to be able to practices black magic.

On the other hand, Nekogami, meaning cat god or cat ghost is all about mystery and agility, often seen as a protector of households and cats living there. They have gained their reputation of gods & protectors during the Japanese Edo period due to their important role in protecting food supplies and sericulture of rats and mice. Other than the Inugami, Nekogami are traditionally not counted as a Yokai, cause they not demon enough.

These ancient beings called Yokai have danced through countless Japanese stories and legends. It’s hard to sum up their deal in a couple sentence, but they are traditionally supernatural beings such as demons or spirits that come in very different shapes, be it resembling certain animals or inanimate household objects. They are an integral part of Japanese folklore.

And now it‘s your turn to stitch their magic into reality. Get your crochet hooks ready – we‘re about to bring some cool, mythical & Japanese vibes into your home!

What makes this Crochet Pattern Unique?

Everyone familiar with my work knows that I’m all about them details. And here I put extra work into giving them Amigurumi that rugged look we often associate with ghosts. Combining something that is originally a bit creepy, rugged or intimidating but keeping it still kinda cute is also big part of my game. And let me tell you, that ghost spiral cost me years of my life haha. And while designing the crochet pattern came really hard for me, hooking up your own Amigurumi should not, be you still rather a beginner or crochet pro. Don’t overlook other small but important details such as the Sash, the funny triangle thingy known from Japanese spirits and the mysterious sphere they come with.
