Y’all favorite crocheting cat is back with another free crochet hat pattern. You ever wanted to crochet a Bucket Hat yourself? Bucket Hats are a religion, either you love ’em or hate ’em, but if you really dig ’em, they are just such a vibe. I always had a special place in my heart for them stylish hats, so a Bucket Hat being my very first crochet pattern not an Amigurumi but for a wearable just makes too much sense.
Get your hook ready and make yourself one of those unique crochet hats with my free pattern. For this, I whipped out my super bulky plush yarn, which makes the bucket hat a super easy and quick make and gives it that fresh 90’s hip-hop vibe as a plus. Just my style! 💜
But don’t sweat it, I will also touch on the formula for you to be able to crochet a Bucket Hat in whatever size you want with whatever yarn you want, so keep reading fam!

Abbreviations used for Crochet Stitches
This pattern uses US crochet terms with the abbreviations below:
- MR = magic ring
- ch = chain
- hdc = half double crochet
- hdc-inc = half double crochet increase (2 half double crochets in the same stitch)
- dc = double crochet
- dc-inc = double crochet increase (2 double crochets in the same stitch)
- FLO = crochet into the front loop only
- BLO = crochet into the back loop only
Adapting the size of the Bucket Hat
Size matters, also when you are in the wearable crochet game. The patterns that I present below have been done and tested with Super Bulky Chenille yarn and a 7mm crochet hook. Since you might not have the same at hand or simply have some other yarn and your favorite hook that you are dead set on using, let’s learn how to tweak the design. You know, teaching somebody how to fish style.
Check this and you will be able to easily make bucket hats in any size that you want with any yarn and hook combination imaginable! Generally, there is 3 variables that you can change to adapt the size of the bucket hat:
- The number of rounds you keep increasing before the sc-only rounds. Change this number to get a different circumference of the center part of the hat.
- The number of rounds you keep crocheting sc’s only. Adapt this to influence the height of the hat.
- The number of rounds you keep doing increases after the sc-only-rounds. Adjust here to create different sizes of the rim of the hat.
The Crochet Pattern - Step by step written instructions
Grown-up size Bucket Hat
This is the OG easy Bucket Hat and the last pattern you will ever need to get your own Bucket Hat conveyor belt production going. You can keep it clean and unicolor or treat this as a blank canvas and go totally bananas with the colors.

Start off every round with chaining 2 and finish every round with a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round!

Baby size Bucket Hat
The size of this here baby bucket hat pattern is a bit on the larger side, so might still be a tee-wee bit big for a newborn. If your baby is a summer born though, you will have the hat ready as soon as the weather cools off and plush yarn on the hat is something that can actually be considered.

This is another adaption of my original bucket hat pattern but this time for your furry lil’ friend. It adds 2 holes for the ears to stick out to create an OG cat bucket hat.
