Sneakers... Off the Womb!

Wazzuuuup Crochet Crew?

Don’t let your baby step foot into this world without the proper dose of style. These Baby Sneakers of mine will help you do just that. As always, the crochet pattern is super easy to hook up (I mean, I am the one who designed and tested it, after all) and fully customizable in terms of the colors you want to use to perfectly go along the receiving lil’ one’s style. And yeah, these instructions won’t cost you a single penny, since it’s another one of them sweet, free patterns of mine 4 sure. You are gonna want to make all of your lil’ friends a new pair of them fits every couple weeks to keep up with them fast growing baby shoe sizes, I swear! (4 realz, be quick to get those to the baby you intend them for, after measuring their feet, or will be too small already!!!)

Before you get started

Yarn colors you will need

  • Main color: for the toebox, tongue and the main part, in my case Lavender
  • Sole color: for the sole and lower part of the shoes as well as the laces and some details, White is a good and solid choice here, but of course 100% up to you
  • Sole detail color: for the line detail on the sole, that is Black for me

Abbreviations used for Crochet Stitches

This pattern uses US crochet terms with the abbreviations below:

  • inc = increase (2 single crochets in the same stitch)
  • dec = decrease (preferably an invisible decrease)
  • ch = chain
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • dc-inc = double crochet increase (2 double crochets in the same stitch)
  • FLO = crochet into the front loop only
  • BLO = crochet into the back loop only

Size of the sneakers and ways to adapt

I used Fingering or Super Fine Yarn together with a 3mm Crochet Hook to create this pattern. This results in shoes of about 10cm in length, which should typically fit a 0 to 3 month old baby, but hey, all them babies have their own unique feet. So, let’s rather learn how to adapt.

If the above is not what you have or want to work with, fear not, the size can easily be adapted. Simply compare the flat part of the sole (first 3 rounds) to the actual foot of the baby to see if it is enough to cover it whole. According to that, adapt the number of stitches in the foundation chain, add stitches for larger size and take away for smaller. Keep the distribution of different types of stitches in follow-up rounds and parts accordingly, always to match the stitch count of the previous row. You can do it!

The Crochet Pattern - Step by step written instructions

The Shoe Sole

- Use Sole Color -

Start off every round with chaining 2 and finish every round with a slip stitch into the first stitch of the round!

Fasten off with a slip stitch and weave in all the ends.

- Use Sole Detail Color -

Attach your yarn + hook in the center back of the shoe between R5 and R6. Then sc around until you reach back to the beginning. Then again, fasten off and weave in all the ends.

The Toebox & Tongue

- Use Main Color -

Chain 1 and turn at the end of every row.

R10)dec, 2sc, dec(4)

Attach another thread of the Main Color at the corner of where the tongue and toebox meet and sc around the tongue to create a nice edge. Then sew the toebox part (R1 - R4) to the front part of the sole, only going through the Back Loops of the Sole R6. Make sure the tongue faces the right direction, the leftover Back Loops from R5 should face inside. Finally, weave in all the ends.

The Main Part

- Use Main Color -

Chain 1 and turn at the end of every row.

sc, hdc, 2dc, hdc, sc, - change to Main Color -
7sc, hdc, 2dc, inc, 4sc(38)

Fasten off and weave in all the ends.

The Shoe Laces

- Use Sole Color -

Simply make a long enough chain of around 75 stitches length, but do not fasten off yet before attaching to adapt the length accordingly. Then thread the chain through the front curved sections of the main part at 3 or 4 spots at each side, then adapt to the required length, fasten off and cut the yarn at the beginning and end (I left a couple mm’s to simulate the ends of actual laces).

The length depends mightily on whether you are planning to tie the laces or not also. Me & my girl like to keep em open for some extra swag, but your sneakers your choice πŸ’œ
